Before you book
What is a Detor Social Table?
You sit down with a few people who also came to meet someone new. A lot of people make new friends this way. You book a seat, answer a few questions once, and we put you at a table. Most tables are six people. The smallest is four and the biggest is twelve. Everyone pays for their own food and drinks. A table can be coffee, brunch, dinner, wine or drinks, and every one of them says which it is.
I have never done this. What is it like?
Everyone at the table booked to meet someone new, the same as you. You give your table name at the door and the staff have the list. Everyone starts with names and where they are from. After that people just talk. If you would rather not come alone the first time, you can bring one person. You sit at the same table.
Is this a dating thing?
No. A Detor Social Table is people who want to meet new people. Many of them become friends, and that is the idea. We do run speed dating nights, and those say "speed dating" everywhere you see them, so you cannot book one by accident.
Who will I sit with?
People we picked for you from the answers you gave us, who came for the same reason you did. Most tables have six people. A table is never smaller than four or bigger than twelve. We aim for an even mix of men and women, except on a women-only table. Come alone or bring one person. Tables mix people, so if you come often, you may sometimes see a familiar face at yours.
How do you decide who sits together?
We use the answers you gave us. Everyone at your table speaks at least one language you speak. We keep ages close, so a gap of about seven years or less does not count against a table. We look at what people normally spend on dinner, so nobody feels awkward about the bill. We mix quiet people and talkative people, because a table of six quiet people is a hard evening. We try to have a couple of people at every table who have been before. And we try never to seat you as the only woman, the only man, or the only person who speaks your language.
A computer draws the tables forty-eight hours before. Twenty-four hours before we send them out. In between, a person looks at the tables again and can move someone who has ended up in the wrong place.
How old do I have to be?
Eighteen. We ask for your birth year when you sign up and you have to confirm you are eighteen or over.
What do you ask me, and why?
Which languages you speak, what year you were born, how you describe yourself, what you normally spend on dinner out, what you are like at a table with new people, and what you like talking about. In the app we also ask where you grew up, if you want to say. Then anything the kitchen should know: how you eat, allergies, and anything the door should know, like step-free entry. Last, your phone number, so we can reach you about your table, and whether you want to stay in touch with people afterwards. It takes about a minute. You answer it once.
What do you do with my answers?
We use them to put your table together. The people at your table see your first name and your pronouns. In the app they also see the table as a group: the kinds of work, where people grew up, the languages and an age range, all together and never next to a name. The restaurant hears about allergies and access needs. Nobody else sees anything. If you add a photo, only the people at your table see it, and only once you have met: when you have both said you are here, or an hour after the start. There is no bio and nothing to browse, on purpose.
Can I bring a friend?
Yes, you can bring one person. You and your plus one always sit at the same table. We spread plus ones across the tables, so you still meet new people. A plus one costs two euros on top of your seat.
What if nobody else books?
A night needs at least three bookings to run at all, and a table needs four people to be a table. If too few people book, we call the night off twenty hours before it starts and give everyone their money back. You will get an email and a message in the app. We do not warn you before that, because a night that looks quiet three days before is often full on the day.
Where do you run tables?
In a few cities in Europe for now, and we open more as people ask for them. Open the app to see the cities and the tables on sale now.
Your table
When do I find out about my table?
Forty-eight hours before the start we put you at a table and tell you that you are in. Twenty-four hours before we send you the place, the address and the first names of the people you are sitting with.
When do I get the address?
Twenty-four hours before the start. Until then you know the city, the date and the time. We do this so the table is a surprise to everyone at it in the same way, and so we can still move people around if we need to.
What is "reconfirm your seat"?
When we put you at a table we ask you to tap one button to say you are still coming. You have until the address goes out, twenty-four hours before the start. It tells us the table is planned around people who will actually be there.
What if I miss the reconfirm?
Nothing happens automatically. Your seat goes to a person on our team, who will look at it and decide. If we cannot reach you, we may give the seat to someone else, and we will email you when we do.
I booked after you sent the tables out. What now?
We look for a seat for you. You will get a message saying we are looking, and a time by which you will hear either way. If we find you a seat at a table with room, you get the address like everybody else. If we cannot, we say so and give you your money back. We will not sell you a seat we know we cannot place.
Can my table change after you tell me?
It can. People cancel, and sometimes we have to join two small tables together. If the people at your table change, you get a message. If your table moves to a different place, or your table is closed and we are finding you another one, we email you as well. Always trust the newest message.
What if the venue is shut, or something goes wrong on the day?
We move your table to another place and email you the new address. The time stays the same. If you have already left home, check the app: your table page always shows where you are going now.
When does the group chat open and close?
It opens an hour before your table starts and stays open for two weeks after the night. It is for the people at your table: saying you are at the door, that you will be ten minutes late, or that it was a lovely evening. Phone numbers and handles are hidden in the group chat. Detor reads it if someone reports a message.
On the night
What do I do when I arrive?
Give your table name at the door. The staff have the list. Your table name is on your table page in the app and in the email we sent you.
When do I see what the others look like?
Before you meet, everyone at your table shows as a drawn face. Once you have both said "I'm here", or an hour after the start, the faces turn into the profile photos people added to their accounts. Only the people at your table see yours, and only if you added one. If one of you blocks the other, neither of you sees the other's photo.
I am at the place and I cannot find the group.
Ask the staff for your table by name. If that does not work, open the app and use the group chat to say where you are standing. If you still cannot find anyone, use "Report a problem" on your table page and we will help.
What does "I'm delayed" do?
It tells the people at your table that you are on your way and about how long you will be. You pick how late you think you are, up to an hour, and you can add a line like "the tram is stuck, start without me". Everyone at your table gets a message. If you are less than ten minutes behind we do not message them, because ten minutes does not change anything for them. It does not cancel anything and it costs nothing. You can use it from the moment we send the address until two hours after the start.
How long does it last?
About two and a half hours. People often stay longer.
What if someone does not come?
The table goes ahead. Afterwards we ask everyone whether everybody came. If you say someone did not, a person on our team looks at it. We never tell the table who said it.
Can I stay in touch with people afterwards?
Yes, if you both want to. Two hours after the start we ask you to choose the people you would like to see again. Nobody sees what you choose. If you both choose each other, you both get each other's phone number, WhatsApp, email and Instagram, and a private chat for the two of you opens in the app. The choice stays open for fourteen days. You can also give each person up to three kudos, like "Made us laugh" or "Great listener". Kudos are anonymous: people see how many they got, never from whom.
Do I have to eat a full meal?
No. Order what you want. You are there for the people at the table.
Money
What does it cost?
A seat costs five euros. Bringing one person costs two euros more. A couples table is seven euros for the two of you. A speed dating seat is nine euros. In many cities your first Detor table is free, even with a plus one. On top of that you pay for your own food and drinks at the place, straight to the restaurant.
What is the five euros for?
Finding you a table, holding the seat, and the work of putting the evening together. It is not a deposit and it is not credit at the restaurant.
Is my first table really free?
In many cities, yes: the first seat you ever book is free, and so is the person you bring. In other cities a first seat costs the same as any other. Each session shows its price, and the app always shows you what you pay before you pay. If you have a code for a free first table, it works in every city.
What if I cannot come?
Cancel your seat in the app, on your table page. Do it as soon as you know, so we can give the seat to someone else. If you cancel more than twenty-four hours before the start, you get your money back. Less than twenty-four hours before, you do not. For speed dating the cut-off is forty-eight hours, because we match women and men in equal numbers and cannot fill a seat at the last minute.
How do I get my money back?
It goes back to the card you paid with. You do not have to ask. The message telling you your seat is cancelled also says what is happening to the money.
What if you cancel my table?
You get all your money back, whatever the reason and whenever it happens. That covers a night called off because too few people booked, a table we had to close, and the times we could not find you a table you would enjoy.
Do you take promo codes?
Detor bookings take promo codes, and a code is applied at checkout. There is a code box on the booking screen, above the pay button. Where your first table is free, it is free without any code.
Do I tip, and who pays the bill?
You pay your own bill at the restaurant, the way you would on any night out. Tipping is up to you.
Safety
What if I feel unsafe?
If you are in danger, call 112 first. There is an SOS button on your table page. Hold it, and we alert our team and your emergency contact. If you have not given us an emergency contact yet, the app asks you for one.
How do I report someone?
Open your table page and tap "Report a problem". You can report the venue or a person at your table. In the table chat you can also tap "Report" next to something they wrote. Only the Detor team reads it, and we never tell anyone who reported them.
Can I block someone?
Yes, in the app: tap their face in your table chat, then "Block". You will not see their messages or their photo, they cannot write to you in a private chat, and we will not seat you at the same table again. They are not told.
What happens after I report someone?
A person on our team reads it, usually the same day. We can take someone off a table, stop them booking again, or ban them. We will tell you what we did.
Who sees my allergies?
We pass them to the restaurant before you arrive, so the kitchen can plan. The people at your table do not see them. An allergy is still yours to manage: tell the staff when you order.
I have access needs.
Tell us in "Anything the door should know", for example step-free entry or a quieter spot. We pass it to the place and we take it into account when we pick where your table goes.
Do you check who comes?
Everyone books with a Detor account and pays with a card, and we read every report. You give your details to us. The people at your table never see them.
Your account
How do notifications work, and can I turn them off?
We send you the things you need to know about your table: you are in, here is the address, a reminder a few hours before, and anything that changes. Those come by email and to your phone. You can turn off anything else in the app: open Profile, then "Notification settings". Turning them all off is fine, but then you have to open the app to see your address.
We do not send anything to your phone between ten at night and eight in the morning, on your own clock, unless your table starts within two hours. Anything else that happens in those hours waits until eight.
I forgot my password.
Tap "Forgot password?" on the sign in page. We email you a link to set a new one. The link works once and then stops.
How do I change my answers?
Sign in and open Table preferences. Change what you like. A change counts from your next table, not one you have already been matched for.
How do I delete my account?
Write to support@godetor.com from the email address on your account and ask us to delete it. An admin handles it within a month of the day you ask, and then your account and your details are anonymised. Bookings you have already paid for are dealt with first.
Where do I find the terms?
The terms, the privacy note and the house rules are linked at the bottom of every page, and in the app under Profile. You agree to the Social Table terms when you book your first seat.
How do I get in touch?
Write to support@godetor.com. If it is about a table tonight, use "Report a problem" on your table page: that reaches a person fastest.
Still need an answer?
Write to us and a person will answer. If it is about a table tonight, use "Report a problem" on your table page.
